During my time at the residency in JAX Diriyah, I wanted to playfully explore the limits and capabilities of palm leaves as an artistic medium. I allowed the material to guide me and I was completely taken over by it over the course of two months.

The shapes that came out of these experiments were reminiscent of birds’ nests and I was intrigued to see how they would interact with nature, so I took them out of the studio and left them outdoors in Wadi Hanifa for about 9 days, documenting the process.

It was also my first experience of working with biomaterials, essentially bidegrable plastics made from algae. I wanted to see how I could merge it with local natural materials and dyes, and expand the possibilities of palm weaving.
